Study Tour + Book Project 2019-2020

This first-of-its kind publication will feature historic places that have been preserved and activated to contribute their unique telling in the story of American popular music, spanning genres and generations from the 1920s through 1960s. The book will provide an authentic account of strategies (professional and DIY) used by communities across the country to document, preserve and interpret popular music heritage sites. At the heart of this project will be people and the importance of their personal life experiences, emotional attachments to place and associated feelings of musical and environmental nostalgia in motivating and sustaining these efforts. It will be a new resource for both professional and citizen preservationists as well as a travel guide for music and history enthusiasts!

Family and Friends! I'm going on TOUR...a study tour to write my first book!
Surveying Strategies in Preserving and Interpreting the Architectural Legacy of American Popular Music
As part of the creative and information-gathering process I'll be intermittently making site visits over the next year to locations that will be featured in the book. I kicked off my "tour" August 30th with my first visit to Herzog Studio in Cincinnati, Ohio (my home state!) and I have an opportunity to attend Tina Turner Heritage Days in Brownsville, Tennessee next weekend as my second stop!
